Make-A-Wish and John Wayne Airport Partner For Trips That Transform Campaign

Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire faced the challenge of acquiring airline mile donations to help grant travel wishes.

I developed a proposal for the Orange County Board of Supervisors to gain approval to partner with John Wayne Airport to launch a co-branded campaign called “Trips That Transform”.

Once we were approved, Make-A-Wish and John Wayne Airport partnered to determine what the campaign would look like and how we would move forward.

As we began to prepare for the campaign, we attended meetings with the employees of the airport and their vendors to educate them about the campaign and why it was so important. I also built a customized website to track donations and visits.

Additionally, I created marketing collateral that would be shared throughout the airport including:

  • Roadside Banners
    •  21 banners along the departure terminal.
  • Window Clings
    • Placed on all airport entrances.
  • Pop Up Banners
    • Nearly 50 spread throughout the airport.
  • Printed Ads
    • Placed where there was free space.
  • Digital Ads
    • For baggage claim signage and digital screens.
  • Table Tents
    • Placed at all restaurants and shops in the airport.

As we launched the campaign, we wanted to create a media moment that would align well with the launch of the campaign. It was decided to create a “Make-A-Wish” lounge at the airport as a space for travelers to visit with their children before their flights.  All furniture and items for the wish lounge were donated.

We then held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with wish children as the official opening of the wish lounge. It turned out to be a hit with the children, although we did learn that markers and small game pieces were probably not the best options for hyperactive children!

 

As of December 2019, we are in talks to make the Wish Lounge a permanent fixture at John Wayne Airport. Additionally, we received a record number of airline mile donations throughout the campaign!
